What is the best way to add speakers and a subwoofer to my video game console and TV (other than 5.1 surround)

I need something cheaper than the 5.1 surround sound. I’m trying to figure out what cables I need and what speaker system would be best. In other words, what’s the best and cheapest way to boost up my sound for my video game system (and TV). I’d like to hear some good bass in gunfires. Any recommendations?
